We are Catholics. We are Americans. We are proud to be both, grateful for the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of liberty which is ours as American citizens. To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary. That is the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live in this land. That is the vision of our founding and our Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths the right to contribute to our common life together.
The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21 through July 4. During the fortnight, we celebrate the feast days of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher (June 22), St. John the Baptist (June 24), Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29) and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome, all great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power. All these people died, in part, because they stood for religious freedom. It is up to us, not necssarily to die for religious freedom in our country, but to be ready to speak up and speak out strongly when religious liberty is threatened. I pray we have the courage and conviction to do so. It will bless us and future fenerations of believers as well.

It's that time again - our biennial Treasure Sale preparations are in the works. Sale dates are September 23 and 24, 2016. In our upcoming bulletins, you will find information on donations, dates and times for collection, and contact information for items you cannot transport yourself. You will also find a volunteer sign-up sheet so that you can lend a hand and meet some other great and generous parishioners who support the Treasure Sale in numerous ways using their time and talents, muscles and experience; all to generate tuition support for our nearby Catholic schools, Our Lady of Fatima in Benton and St. John's in Hot Springs.
Please give your attention to this parish-wide endeavor. Whether you help by donating no longer desired household items, or by supporting us in the collection or pricing of items during the week of the sale, cashiering and accounting on the sale dates, transporting to or setting up the goods for sale, we need YOU! Keep the Treasure Sale in mind; pray about how you can make a difference in this particular parish undertaking that benefits nearby children who need our support to receive a Catholic education; and check future bulletins for inserts on the Sacred Heart of Jesus Treasure Sale.

This is a good and timely movie as we are showing it only days after Father's Day and at the start of the Fortnight for Freedom observance which actually starts June 21 and ends July 4. Fresh popcorn, snacks and drinks will be provided to those who join us, starting around 5:30 p.m. (NOTE: This is a change from a movie that was previsouly advertised in last week's bulletin. It will be re-scheduled at a later date).
